British Shanghai Defence Force 1938-39 Memorial Silk Trapunto. 18.5" x 22.5" framed dimensions; on dark blue silk, with elaborate silk and metallic thread padded embroidery featuring a display of flags including Great Britain, Nationalist China, the United States, Italy, Japan, etc.  Center has oval fame for a personal photo.  The one installed does not appear to relate; it is of a WWI era British artillery Lieutenant.  Below this is an embroidered East Surrey Regiment badge.  Embroidered text: "2ND BATTALION THE EAST SURREY REGIMENT / 70TH OF FOOT / SHANGHAI DEFENCE FORCE CHINA 1938 1939".  2nd Battalion was posted to the Shanghai Defence Force in September 1938.  A good trapunto just on its own, but particularly interesting due to the subject matter!
