WWI Mermaid & Sea Creatures Exceptional Trench Art Shell: Artist Signed. British 3-pounder shell casing stands 38cm tall, with the main body of the shell divided into three distinct panels, one tall segment in the center, flanked by slightly smaller ones on either side in the Palladian fashion; background features bubbles, leaves and sea life, central segment displays a beautifully-rendered mermaid with elaborate tail and long, flowing hair; flanked by a sea creature on her left and a seahorse on her right.  Additional brass pieces are added at the base and crown to carry the design into extremely bold relief.  Exhibits a rich dark patina, with traces of painted highlights.  Artist's signature is located at the base.  Headstamp has 1901 date.  Without a doubt one of the very nicest pieces of trench art we have ever encountered.  Estimate: $600 - $800
