Allegorical Bulgarian Trench Art Shell from the Macedonian Struggle, 1906. One side of the shell shows a lion with a shield. I don't speak Bulgarian, but it seems to read, "The enemy will take revenge." The other side has a caged Bulgarian lion surrounded by other countries depicted as animals and labeled in Cyrillic script. Starting at the bottom left with the Greek soldier with the snake head and going around: cat - Montenegro; fish - Italy; rooster - Austria; rooster - Germany; wolf - Russia; rooster - France; lion with paw over it's face - Britain; pig - Serbia; and last but not least the bull - Romania. The rest of the shell is well done with floral and geometric patterns throughout. Shell stands 28cm tall and has a 1906 date on the bottom. Estimate: $60 - $90
