Belgian Refugees Sandal Carved Wooden Tray 14.5" carved wooden tray depicts the rampant Belgian lion and motto in the center surrounded by a shamrock, rose, and thistle. This is encircled by the inscription BELGIAN REFUGEES SANDAL 1914-15 and intertwined vines. The reverse is protected with a layer of well worn green felt. There was no refugee camp at the village of Sandal in Yorkshire. Instead, local housing and occupational support was arranged throughout Britain by the government and the War Refugees Committee to accommodate the quarter million Belgians who fled to Britain during WWI. There is one notable chip in the rim with lesser dimpling and scarring as well as a few spots of discoloration. This item is pictured on page 251 of Jane Kimball's book Trench Art: An illustrated History. Estimate: $100 - $200
