Estimate: $300 - $400 Historical Background: The Bavarian Order of St. Michael, initially a military order, was founded by Archbishop Joseph Clemens of Bavaria, Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, in 1693. It was formally confirmed by Maximilian Joseph, King of Bavaria, in 1808. The order was dedicated to Saint Michael, the archangel. The initial intent and nature of the order evolved over time as Bavaria's political landscape shifted. In 1837, under Ludwig I of Bavaria, the order transitioned from a military order to an order of merit, officially renamed the Order of Merit of St. Michael. This reform divided the order into three classes: Knight Grand Cross, Knight Commander, and Knight. Further reforms and introductions of classes and affiliated medals—including a cross of merit and a silver medal in 1887—ensured its continued prominence as a distinguished Bavarian honor, though it is no longer awarded today.
