Estimate: $1500 - $2500 Historical Background: The Prussian 1813 Iron Cross was a prestigious military decoration established by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia on March 10, 1813, during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon Bonaparte's First French Empire. It was one of the most famous military honors in history and was divided into three classes: 2nd Class, 1st Class, and the Grand Cross. The 2nd Class, a ribbon-bound award, was the most common class and was typically worn from a black ribbon with two thin white bands, reflecting the colors of Prussia. Designed by the famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the cross was made of a black painted iron core set within a silver frame. The design of the 1813 Iron Cross featured a Pâtée cross shape, with the center containing the monogram of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, "FWR," surmounted by the Prussian crown. The four arms of the cross were adorned with oak leaves, and the number "1813," commemorating the year of its establishment, was placed between the arms. The Iron Cross 2nd Class insignia included an eyelet with a ribbon ring at the top for suspension. It was awarded for distinguished service in the Prussian War of Liberation, and a certificate of award accompanied the badge upon presentation.
