It is an order of merit intended to reward excellent civil or military conduct delivered upon official investigation, acknowledging those who serve the general interest of the nation. The decoration upholds the dual principles of service to the nation and the universality of the award, rewarding deserving citizens in all fields of activity. The President of the French Republic serves as the Grand Master of the Order. The Legion of Honour is divided into five classes of increasing distinction: Chevalier (Knight), Officier (Officer), Commandeur (Commander), Grand Officier (Grand Officer), and Grand-Croix (Grand Cross). The decoration features a five-armed Maltese cross hung on an oak and laurel wreath, with the motto "Honneur et Patrie" (Honor and Fatherland). It is presented on behalf of the Head of State and is worn before any other French or foreign insignia.
