Estimate: $150-200 Historical Background: The Commemorative medal of the Mexico Expedition, known in French as the Médaille commémorative de l'expédition du Mexique, was established by decree of French Emperor Napoleon III on August 29, 1863. This campaign medal was created to recognize military service during the 1862-1863 French intervention in Mexico. Eligibility for the award was extended to French citizens and foreign nationals serving in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion who participated in the military service during this period. Approximately 38,000 medals were issued, although it is no longer awarded. The medal features the head of Napoleon III facing left on its obverse, encircled by the inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR" within a bound olive wreath. The reverse side bears the inscription "EXPEDITION DU MEXIQUE *1862.1863*" surrounding the battle honors, including 'CUMBRES' and 'CERRO'. The French intervention in Mexico ultimately extended into 1867, ending when Emperor Napoleon III ordered the repatriation of all remaining French troops, and the abandoned Emperor Maximilian was captured and executed.
