It was instituted during the French Protectorate era as a way to acknowledge loyalty to the Alaouite dynasty and remains one of Morocco's premier honors today. The decoration is awarded for displaying heroism in combat or contributing meritorious service to the Moroccan state. The order is awarded in five classes: Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. The specific medal referenced is the "Officer" grade, one of the middle ranks of the decoration. It was historically associated with France's colonial period in Morocco, as indicated by the "Colonial Morocco" designation, and was often awarded to diplomats, military leaders, and other national contributors. Since Moroccan independence in 1956, the Order has remained currently constituted and is awarded by the King of Morocco, King Mohammed VI.
