It was established by Emperor Napoleon III on January 22, 1852, and is awarded for acts of bravery in action against an enemy force or for long service. It is presented by France and is considered the most senior entirely military active French decoration. The medal is awarded to privates, non-commissioned officers, and, exceptionally, to generals and admirals who have served as commanders-in-chief and already possess the grand cross of the Legion of Honour. As an award for valor, the Médaille Militaire ranks immediately after the Legion of Honour. It is often referred to as the Legion of Honour of the NCO and enlisted soldier. The ribbon is yellow with green stripes on each edge. Over the years, the medal has been awarded for various reasons, including wounds received in combat and citations at the order of the army. During World War I, approximately 230,000 médailles were awarded. It is currently still being awarded.
