French Saint Helena Medals: Lot of Three. Group of 3-French Saint Helena medals. The medal was established in 1857 by emperor Napoleon III to recognize soldiers and their participation in the campaigns led by emperor Napoleon. The medals in this group all exhibit a dark bronze patina and toning and present original ribbons that exhibit wear, fading, staining and tears. Estimate: $200 - $300 Historical Background: The Saint Helena Medal, known in French as the Médaille de Sainte-Hélène, was the first French campaign medal. It was established on August 12, 1857, by a decree from Emperor Napoleon III. The medal was created to honor both French and foreign soldiers who served in the land armies or naval fleets of the Republic or the Empire between 1792 and 1815, recognizing their participation in the campaigns led by Emperor Napoleon I, including the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. This recognition was accompanied by an award certificate from the Grand Chancery of the Legion of Honour. The total number of medals awarded was approximately 305,000 to Frenchmen and 55,000 to foreigners. The medal ceased to be awarded after 1870. It holds precedence in the French system of honors, ranking below the Medal of the Nation's Gratitude and above the Commemorative medal of the 1859 Italian Campaign.
