Estimate: $500 - $700 Historical Background: The Dukely Order of Henry the Lion was a house order of merit of the Duchy of Brunswick (Braunschweig), founded by Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick on April 25, 1834. The order was established to honor individuals who distinguished themselves through meritorious military or civil service. Named in honor of Henry the Lion, a popular historical figure, the order remained active until the end of the monarchy in November 1918, with a total of 14,124 inductees during its existence. It was awarded by the Duke of Brunswick and featured the motto IMMOTA FIDES (Latin for "Unwavering Loyalty"). The order had various classes and decorations, including the Grand Cross, Commander Cross, Knight's Cross, Silver Cross of Merit, and Decoration of Honour. The different grades could be awarded with or without swords, indicating war merit, and higher classes were sometimes conferred upon holders of a lower class who had already received the lower class with swords. Four copies of the Grand Cross were also made with diamonds for exceptionally special merits. The order's insignia for a Grand Commander grade set, for example, would be awarded by the Duke of Brunswick.
