It is considered one of Belgium's highest honors and is primarily awarded for meritorious service to the Belgian state. The Order is subdivided into five degrees or classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. It is generally given to individuals with a certain status after a long career or for extraordinary service. The motto of the Order is TRAVAIL ET PROGRES (Labor and Progress) in French and ARBEID EN VOORUITGANG in Dutch. The Order may also be awarded to foreign nationals, including military and diplomatic personnel. A notable example is its widespread authorization during the Second World War to Allied military personnel who assisted in the liberation of Belgium from Nazi Germany's occupation forces. The Order of the Crown is currently constituted, with His Majesty King Philippe serving as the Grand Master. It is awarded by royal decree.
